What are Access Control Systems?
Access control systems can be defined as any system that controls and/or monitors access to an area. They can be as simple as a one door system that allows a door to be electronically locked or unlocked by pushing a button. A complex system may monitor, track and control a number of doors and gates from various facilities over the internet but also allow for each area to be accessed by individual users with biometric hand recognition readers.
Benefits of Access Control Systems:
Access control systems increase security while conveniently controlling access.
Users can be added or deleted easily.
Users can gain access automatically to an area by a
unique code, key card/tag, or biometric recognition system (hand, finger or
face identification reader)
Hand or finger ID readers provide positive identification.
Audit trail feature can track whom entered and when.
Areas can be automatically locked or unlocked at programmed times.
One time access may be used for temporary workers or service people.
Areas can be controlled, monitored and tracked remotely by computer, video surveillance, and intercom.
Internal theft can be tracked and/or discouraged by use of audit trail capabilities and digital video surveillance systems.
